During VIIIth century AD, a large dam was built, was called, at the time the Maryab. Between two mountains, a gravel, ground and sand wall was high on a 16 metrrs height. During more than one millenium, this system made it possible to irrigate 96 km2 of cultures and to feed a population from 30 000 to 50 000 inhabitants.
