SoHo (for SOuth of HOuston) was formerly known under the name of Cast-Iron District. The cast iron was, indeed, the economic and resistant basic material which was used for construction of these tens of factories and warehouses. The shortly after the war, these buildings were unoccupied, when artists, conscious of the amazing possibilities of the district, settled in monumental spaces to work there at ease and to expose their works in them.
