In 909, the city of Kairouan loses its statute of capital when Fatimides choose Mahdia for residence. In 1057, Beni Hilal destroy the city. Kairouan knows a long eclipse which benefits Tunis especially. Its political role becomes null, but its religious role does not cease growing and it reaches the statute of "Holy City" after Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem and Cairo.
