St. Simeon


St. Simeon "the Stylit" was born in about 390. At 12 years old, it joined a group of ascetic. Its aspiration to the asceticism leads him to be set up on the hill to build an enclosure, the Mandra. But, finding its insulation insufficient whereas the pilgrims start to surge, he raises little by little a column which will end up measuring 20 m high and top of which he is held chained during nearly 35 years until its death in 459.
