" The celestial castle " on the " rock of the lion " was built in Vth century by the king Kassapa on and around a monolithic rock which rises until 200 metres above the surrounding jungle. The site was surrounded by a powerful fortified wall. The rock of Sigiriya was inhabited only during 18 years from 473 to 491.
