Many festivals take place during all the year, most important are those of the Vesak (lunar feast) during May, all the island is illuminated by tens of thousands of Chinese lanterns. The festival of Kelaniya Duruthu Perahera celebrates the birthday of the date of birth of the Buddha. This festival proceeds in February in the surroundings of Colombo. But most important of all the festivities of the island is the Perahera of Kandy in July or August.
