Kandy


The area of Kandy, located in the mountainous centre of the island, was populated only relatively late by Singhalese. In XIVth century, some temples were built which exist still nowadays. Located far from the coast, protected well by the loop of the river, the hills and the jungle, Kandy was sheltered from Portuguese and Dutch conquerors, who never reached to occupy this natural fortress.
