Anuradhapura was founded into 437 BC. it was initially called Anuradhagrama according to the name of its legendary founder Anuradha, which is also the name of a constellation. On the map of the famous geographer Ptolemy in the antiquity, it appears under the name of Anuradhagrammon. The real founder of the city seems to be the king Pandukabhaya who chooses the site into 380 BC to build his capital there.
