The city was, with some interruptions, the capital of Sri Lanka during the VIIIth century. The most important monuments, raised for the majority from the XIIth to the XIVth century were influenced by the Hindu architecture of Southern India in the medieval time. Many are the temples of Polonnaruwa which are still regarded nowadays as holy places by Buddhists.
