The legend says that Mafate was one of these " maroon " slaves (fugitives) who, to escape justice, sought shelter in the mountains; it would have taken refuge in a very wild cirque and its name would have given from him. Of the three cirque of Réunion, that of Mafate is indeed the most wild and the most inaccessible.
