Coimbra is one of the oldest university cities of Europe. Founded into 1288, the university was transferred not long after to Lisbon. It is only in 1537 that it returned to Coimbra. The university does not exert only a geographical domination. The 20 000 students who make it up (20% of the population) give to the city a great dynamism.
