Amou Daria, 1437 kilometres length, takes its source in the Kouch Hindu and crosses the high plateau of Pamir in Tadzhikistan to then follow the Afghan border before directing towards the North-West. Separating Kyzyl Koum (red sands) from Kara Koum (black sands) in Turkmenistan, it constituted from immemorial time the border of the Turkish and Persan worlds.
