At last century, 9000 mills prevented the polders being invaded by water, and incidentally milled also the grain, sawed wood and pressed oil. The first mills of pumping date from XIVth century and are equipped at their base with a bucket wheel being used to raise water to reject it into drainage canals. The mills, replaced little by little by steam engines, are only about one thousand, spread in the whole Netherlands.
