Of all botanical curiosities of the Namibia, strangest is undoubtedly the extraordinary Welwitschia mirabilis. It is in the plains in the east of Swakopmund that one meets them in greater number. Curiously, the welwitschias are actually trees related with conifers, specifically with the pines. The welwitschias slowly grow, largest, whose tangled up mass of sheets can reach 2 metres, are 2000 years old. The majority of the plants of average size have less than 1000 years old.
