Port-Louis

Port-Louis (150 000 inhabitants), thus called in the honor of king of France Louis XIV, in the name of which the captain Dufresne d'Arsel took possession of the island in 1715. It is the capital, and the only port of the island. In XVIIIth century, Port-Louis was a naval base and an important commercial port. Affected by the opening of Suez Canal, the traffic of Port-Louis grew again during its closing following the Israelo-Arabic wars. Today, it remains one of most active small world ports.
