After the abolition of slavery in 1835, Mauritius turned to another source of labour (to continue the development of the sugar cane): the immigration of coolies, come from India by way of volunteers, with the help of very weak wages. Until the suspension of Indian immigration in 1909, the island received 450 000 volunteers whose most didn't return to India. Currently, the Indians of Mauritius accounts for the 2/3 of the population.
