When the some three hundred Knights of the Order, led by the Great Master Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, arrived in Malta into 1530, they settled in the small locality of Birgu, which, after the Great Siege, took the name of Vittoriosa. On the parallel headlands, two strengthened cities were built: Senglea and Cospicua.
