Since the XVth century, the cauris acted as currency of exchange in the major part of West Africa. They were only the small change in a system of transaction where gold, it, represented the big bills. Then the European traders imported enormous quantities of cauris, what had the effect of making disappear the cauris of the circulation as monetary value. It is now used for the adornments and the decoration of the fetishes.
