Mopti was first a minuscule village, founded by Bozo fishers. The city blooms under the reign of El Hadj Oumar who, in 1861, made his main military basis of it in the war that he led against the Fulani of the Macina. With the construction of the railroad Dakar-Bamako, Mopti became the biggest fluvial port of the French Sudan.
