The town of Madaba counts 86 000 inhabitants, mainly Greek-orthodox. It has many churches all decorated with mosaics. Most known is that of the Card of Palestine, located in the Saint-George church. This mosaic found in 1897, was carried out in the VIth century, it measured 15 m by 5 m, and presented all the areas of Palestine, of Lebanon, of Jordan, of the Sinai and of the delta of the Nile. All the places are identified in Coptic and the center of the card (opposite) is occupied by Jerusalem, centre of the world par excellence.
