Qasr El-Kharane


Contrary to the other desert residences, its plan suggests a defensive function. The date of its construction is unknown but an inscription proves that the building existed already into 711. Greek inscriptions indicate that an older installation had undoubtedly preceded it. This castle contains a courtyard bordered of two floors of galleries. On the floor, arched rooms, decorated with plasters and stuccos offer a beautiful example of ornaments from VIIIth century.
