Kerak Castle


Kerak existed at the first millenium BC under the name of Kir-Heres. At the Byzantine time, the city becomes the seat of a bishopric. Kerak takes a new importance with the arrival of the Francs in the Levant. After the catch of Jerusalem, the crusaders undertake to protect the areas near the Holy City. In 1142, the king of Jerusalem decides the construction of a new fortress at Kerak, whose population is mainly Christian.
