Yogyakarta is located right in heart of Java. Populated of 600 000 inhabitants (of which 90% are Moslem), it is one of the old capitals with Surakarta, of the Indo-Javanese kingdom Mataram. Yogyakarta is a university city and the seat of the Institute (created in 1921) in charge of the study of the Javanese culture.
