Borobudur


Abandoned in 950 and dismantled by a chaos of lianas and tangled up roots, Borobudur was rediscovered in 1814 by Sir Thomas raffles which then made clear the monument and join together the scattered parts around the site. In 1968, faced with the extent of deterioration, the Indonesian government called upon UNESCO which decided to save Borobudur in 1973. It was then necessary to dismount three million stones, 1460 low-reliefs sculpted on 4km of walls, 173 stupas and 504 statues of bouddhic divinities. The work carried out by a hundred of people, was completed in 1985.
