Varanasi (in the past Benares) counts one million inhabitants, is for the Hindus the "Holy City" par excellence. Located on left bank of Ganges, the city is directed to the west towards banks of the great river bordered by the staircases of Ghats from which the steps go down to the edge of water. The "Holy River", the ghats, and the old city "Gali" with its many temples gives to Varanasi its single atmosphere in the world.
