When the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1954, the chief of Buddhist sect Kagyu-Pa found refuge in Sikkim. The country granted a ground to him to build a monastery, which became Rumtek in the years 1960 and which is the exact replica of the Tibetan monastery of Tsruphu.
