According to some geologists, the formation of the lake is due to the appearance, 180 000 years ago, of a volcano located at the west of the current depression. Bottom of water having filled the crater, the three current volcanos then emerged, giving to the lake this bean shape which one sees today, then at the foot of Tolimán, the Cerro de Oro, small volcano in formation, where the tradition wants that Tzutuhils, on arrival of the Spaniards, hid their treasure.
