Monastiraki is an old Turkish district transformed into flea market. Athens is selected like capital only in 1833. It is a small village of 5 000 inhabitants approximately, but, consequently, its growth will accelerate. In 1920, it counts 450 000 inhabitants, thanks in particular on arrival of many refugees coming from the territories concerned by the Balkan wars or the Greco-Turkish conflicts. It reaches the million inhabitants in 1930.
