Mer de Glace


From the higher station of the railroad of Chamonix inaugurated in 1908, one discovers the whole of the Mer de Glace. The glacier, length 14 km, thick 400 metres by places, increases by 90 metres each year. It transports rocks which, such of the abrasives, striate its walls, carries rock crumbs which give it its soiled and greyish aspect.
