The city of Dire Dawa is located at an altitude of 1220 m and is the second most populated city of Ethiopia. Dire Dawa emerged with the
construction of the railroad which connects the port of Djibouti to Addis Ababa. The railway reached the plain of Dire Dawa in 1902, it was the terminus of the section coming from Djibouti until 1912.
