Quito (1,4 million inhabitants) is the capital of Ecuador, has two universities, several prestigious schools and scientific institutes. The city located at an average altitude of 2800 m, was founded in 1534 by the Spanish, on an undulating ground which is composed mainly of volcanic ash coming from the Pichincha volcano (4776 m).
