The history of Aswan starts on the Elephantine island (opposite). Of its Egyptian name Abou (" elephant " or " ivory "), it was under the Pharaohs the capital of the first nomist of High-Egypt. They found there the sanctuary of the Khnoum god-ram, and the famous nilometre, which foreseen and measured the risings of the Nile. The town of Aswan, called Syene by the Greeks, was especially the district of the warehouses and the markets.
