Aswan, it is the first cataract of the Nile, a world of rocks and bubbling water. The old ones believed that the muddy rising which fertilized the country each year emerged from a mysterious cavern hidden under the rapids. In its centre, the Elephantine island undulates on the Nile more lake than river. Aswan was the door of Egypt, beyond stretched Nubia.
