Beijing - From 1421 to 1911, Beijing was capital and sentinel of the moving world of the steppe. In 1949, new China took again the city to make the symbol of its territorial apogee. Today, Beijing follows close behind Shanghai. The horizontal city becomes vertical. The palaces and the temples are nothing any more historical beacons thrown on the Pekinese chess-board.
