In Hubei, as of 400 BC, the first fortifications are raised by the fighting Kingdoms of Qin, Yan and Zhao to defend oneself from the incursions of the Xiongnu cavaliers. These fortifications are out of rammed ground, sometimes reinforced by stones. They are these lines of defence against the nomads of the steppe, but also against the other Chinese kingdoms, which will become the Great Wall.
