In 1861, Chengde, summer residence of Manchus, were definitively abandoned after the death of the Xianfeng emperor. Its widow, Cixi preferred to invest million of taels of silver to give again briliance to this area near the capital, giving up the other gardens ransacked by the Franco-British troops in 1860.
