Capoeira


The capoeira follows from a African fight developed by the slaves to fight their masters. Prohibited by the latter and banished from senzalas (districts of slaves), it was practised clandestinely in forest. The beats of hands and the pluckings of berimbau, string instrument resembling a fishing-rod, informed the fighters of the approach of the master; later, they were incorporated to the rhythms of the dance.
