Vienna, 1,6 million inhabitants is the capital of the Republic of Austria. The historical center was in the beginning a Roman camp. Its progressive expansion led to the construction of fortifications at the 16th S. In 1857, the Francis-Joseph emperor ordered their demolition, thus inaugurating the circular Ringstrasse. A very ecological municipal policy resulted in the creation of parks, of the plantations of trees, the safeguard of the flora and Danubian fauna, of the programmes of purification of water as well as safeguarding of architecture.
